Introduction
Aqsis is a high quality, photorealistic, 3D rendering solution. It complies with the RenderMan® interface standard defined by Pixar.

The RenderMan® standard has been used in film and television visual effects since it's introduction in 1989. Pixar has used their own implementation for all of their award winning CG features, and provided their implementation for use in the visual effects of most major blockbuster films over the last 2 decades. The Aqsis project offers a way for individuals and organistaions alike to gain experience with the RenderMan® interface without the cost of commercial software licenses.

Aqsis comprises a command line rendering tool, a tool for compiling shaders in the RSL language, a tool for preparing textures for optimal use, and various developer libraries to enable integration with third party tools.

Aqsis is licensed under the GPL license, with some parts under the LGPL.

Aqsis : Aqsis 1.4 Available for Download
Posted by pgregory on 2008/7/22 12:52:24 (111 reads)

Aqsis 1.4

After a great deal of effort on the part of many people, we can finally present the latest stable release of Aqsis, 1.4.

This is a very significant release, including some major changes to functionality such as a complete rewrite of the texturing system, a new
framebuffer, and many many more changes and fixes.

This is probably the most stable and functional release we've made. We have a new release procedure in place that meant this release has
been rigorously tested and proven over a period of 3 months prior to release.

We've also managed to work closely with some key industry players to ensure Aqsis works well with the tools that the major studios rely on, such as Massive.

Downloads are available from SourceForge.

An overview of the major changes can be found here, and a more detailed description in the release notes here.

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped with this release, there has been a great deal of effort by many people. Not just coding, but testing and reporting bugs, working with partners to ensure proper support, documentation
and other area's that don't always get noticed. You all know who you are, so please give yourselves a big pat on the back, and accept my sincere gratitude.

Aqsis 1.4 release has just reached 'Phase3'!

Currently, our build server is down, but as soon as we are able to, the automated daily builds will continue to be available for the following systems:

Windows
OS X
Source

The codebase is now frozen to anything but bug fixes. This is the final stage before release, it should last a couple of weeks at the most depending on the amount of testing it gets and what bugs get reported.

Aqsis 1.4 release has just reached 'Phase2'!

Automated daily builds are will continue to be available for the following systems:

Windows
OS X
Source

The codebase is now frozen to feature changes, only bug fixes and changes/improvements to functionality that don't change the way things work will be allowed. So any content generated against 1.3 from here on in will work unchanged on 1.4.

Some things are worth waiting for and, despite being a couple of days late, the new Aqsis 1.4 release has just reached 'Phase 1'!

The new features have now been set with highlights including:

* Eqsl - A user interface for Aqsis.
* Piqsl - An advanced, non-blocking, framebuffer.
* AqsisTex - An improved texture handling system and library.
* Smooth shading interpolation.
* Internal shader pre-processor.
* Linux desktop integration.
* OS X bundle.

Automated daily builds are available for the following systems:

Windows
OS X
Source

Testing and feedback will officially commence within a few weeks, during 'Phase 2', though there's no need to wait!

Note: Linux binaries are being prepared for 'Phase 2'.
